We've visited a lot of waterfalls in our day, but the one that always seems to draw us back no matter how many times we visit is Minnehaha Falls right here in Lakemont. Something about the water cascading down the several drops before gliding across the smooth orange stone at the base just has us captivated every time we visit. Anna Ruby Falls, just outside of Helen, is a fascinating and unique waterfall where two creeks merge in fantastic fashion. We don't know of many other waterfalls in Georgia that give you this sort of reward for such little effort. With a paved trail just shy of a half-mile, this is a great option for families or those with limited mobility. If you find yourself in the area, we definitely recommend taking the time to stop in.

Looking to get out on the water as we warm up this year? Whitewater rafting has always been one of our favorite ways to escape the summer heat while having a blast! And there is hardly a better place to experience this thrill for the first time other than on the Chattooga River. The Chattooga's "Wild and Scenic" designation means that you'll experience one of the most beautiful rides out there, with no development and limited traffic on the river; it's mother nature in its purest form!

If you're looking to give it a shot, there are three guide companies to check out, but you can't go wrong with any of them as they're all fantastic and offer section rides of varying difficulties and lengths.

This is an important conservation tip that often gets overlooked. Especially if you’ve got the spirit of a naturalist inside you. We have all found that one flower, rock, or cool artifact that we so badly want to take home with us. The hard truth is, that we should leave most things where they lay. Taking these items from their surroundings can sometimes have impacts that we aren’t aware of at the time. @leavenotraceorg has a ton of good information on this as one of their 7 Leave No Trace Principles so we would encourage you to check them out for a full run down.

Many of these small items that we may think of as inconsequential are actually very important to the ecosystems we’re visiting. Things you find on the ground are the backbone of homes for many small creatures and so many animals rely on vegetation for food and nutrients. So when we damage or take these items, we are potentially taking what may be necessary for the ecosystem.
Leaving what we find doesn’t always refer to removing something from the environment either. One of the biggest issues is altering a location. Something we see way too often is carvings in trees or graffiti on platforms or viewing decks. For the trees, carvings damage the bark of the tree and can often disrupt the flow of essential nutrients. Removing bark opens up the tree, making it more susceptible to damage from other sources and if the carving goes deep enough, the tree can truly starve to death.

At the end of the day, all of the small things in nature add up to create the full experience that we are all out to enjoy. So let’s all give consideration to what our human impact is on the public lands that we all love so that the same full experience we enjoy is available for the next generation.
