Toccoa Falls just might be the easiest waterfall h

Toccoa Falls just might be the easiest waterfall hike in Georgia, if you'd consider it a hike. The "hike" is no more than 100 yards up a gravel walkway before the trees give way to these magnificent towering falls. At 186 feet high, it's actually taller than Niagra Falls and one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in the Southeast. As fascinating as it is to stand at the base of the falls, it's also pretty terrifying if you are familiar with the history of Toccoa Falls. On November 6th, 1977 the dam upstream of Tocca Falls gave way after several days of continual rain. The dam break sent 176 million gallons of water surging over the falls and through the college campus below. The water swept 39 people to their deaths and destroyed several campus structures and roadways. We've read the signs at the falls and heard of a few personal accounts from residents who were nearby when the dam broke, but it's still hard to imagine being in that moment.

When we visit a new place, it’s tempting and eas

When we visit a new place, it’s tempting and easy to forget the people that call these amazing places home year-round. We all tend to get wrapped up in the sense of adventure because we’re in the mountains and we’re on vacation or on a day trip. We love to unplug and wander as it’s the perfect way to take advantage of all that our state and region have to offer when it comes to nature. But it’s important that when we all travel - whether near or far - to be considerate and respectful of the areas we visit. In our regions particularly, the public lands we visit were created for all of us to share and enjoy. But long after visitors leave, locals are left with whatever impact that might be left.

So, what can we do to respect local communities and other people’s homes?

First and foremost, leave no trace. This goes without saying and applies to every day trip or weekend trip out there. It is important that we leave things as we found them. And in all honesty, we should aim to leave them better than we found it. If there is trash there when you arrive, please consider picking it up and setting things to right by the time you leave. This goes for trash, carving on trees or leaving graffiti on structures, and even minimizing damage to the trails that we use to access locations.

Another way that we can respect local communities is with something as simple as being friendly. Engage with others around you. Practice some good Southern manners. Find out the local history of these places and how they came to take the shape they have. Support the local restaurants and small businesses while you’re out. We have met so many amazing people and found so many great local options for shopping and eating all because we were intentional about practicing gratitude while we visited. There are a lot of amazing places out their worth visiting. But at the end of the day, it’s the people that give them their life and personality and make them what they are. So let’s all consider celebrating and honoring them with our words and actions.
