The first day of spring is tomorrow and what bette The first day of spring is tomorrow and what better way to kick it off than a waterfall road trip? This is one of our favorite day-trip loops! This drive through the mountains traverses some of Georgia's most stunning mountain peaks, winds through beautiful backroads, and takes you to three of our favorite quick waterfall hikes.

This journey starts just north of Helen, where you'll hop onto "Richard B. Russell Scenic Hwy" and head northwest towards Hogpen Gap. Followed with a trip over to Helton Creek Falls, just be aware that Hatchet Creek Rd is gravel with two creek crossings if you approach the falls from the East. But there is an easier approach from 129/ Blood Mountain if you'd like to make the stop. We then crossed over Blood Mountain to visit Desoto Falls, which is another great short waterfall hike. This hike offers both an upper and lower falls which are split from the trailhead, so you can choose to do either one, or both! From Desoto Falls, we continued southwest over to Dick's Creek Falls/Water's Creek falls. (The name changes depending on who you ask) This is another great roadside spot with a beautiful falls and a couple fishing holes. It is a very popular swimming hole in the summer, but we had it to ourselves on this early autumn morning. This is a super brief summary to fit into Instagram's word limit, but if you'd like more details and suggestions, this is a spur from one of our blog posts linked in our bio!

The first official day of spring is approaching, a The first official day of spring is approaching, and there's no better sign than all of the incredible blooming flowers and trees across North Georgia! Tulips have always been a favorite of ours, and we always love seeing the tulip fields over at @jaemorfarms . Each spring, they open up their tulip fields for a few weekends so that guests can come and pick their own! They just opened up last weekend, and if the freeze this week didn't take them out, they'll be back at it this weekend! Check their page for updates.

We may have gotten our butts whooped, but we still We may have gotten our butts whooped, but we still had a fantastic time at the first inaugural Clayton Soapbox derby this weekend. We want to say a huge thanks to the Clayton Police Department, @visitclaytonga and @claytongagov as well as all staff and volunteers that made this happen! It was a ton of fun and we really hope to see this event back next year so we've got another shot!

As we move into spring and start getting out on th As we move into spring and start getting out on the trail more, it's important to keep a few things in mind. There is nothing more tempting for us than the lure of unspoiled woods off the main trail. In our early 20s, and especially when we were just getting into the outdoors, we were incredibly guilty of this. We would constantly veer off trail. Or cut our own path from one switchback to another. Or we would want to sneak around or under or on top of a waterfall beyond the viewing area that was provided to us. We were completely naive to the impacts these acts had but now that we know better, we want to make sure we share what we’ve learned. Going off trail, especially if enough people start to do it in the same spot, can cause massive problems. The first and biggest of which is erosion. When we go off trail and start blazing new paths, we create erosion issues that can last for generations. We have to keep in mind that the trails that are in place and have been cut where they are were chosen to minimize impact to the environment and the ecosystem. The most common place we see this in switchbacks. Switchbacks are the longer, meandering S-shaped spots in the trail that help make getting up and down the steepest parts of a trail easier. However, what a lot of people do when we see the next switch back is to “skip ahead”. So instead of staying on the slow, gradual trail, they’ll go straight up or down and try to pick up the trail via a shortcut by cutting ahead. Going up and down like this in steep sections basically creates massive gullies when the rain comes and compounds erosion issues on the side of the mountain. Staying on the trail will not only make your hike easier and more enjoyable, but will prevent this type of long term damage that is hard to fix. Nature will usually heal these scars if given enough time and space, but she won’t be happy about it in the interim.
